(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, 02 AUG – Protests across India by the Congress Party after, today, agents of the Enforcement Directorate, the Indian Finance Investigative Agency, raided the headquarters of the newspaper in New Delhi ” National Herald “and 14 other offices across the country.
The raids were the umpteenth initiative of the Tax Agency on the “case” concerning the acquisition of the newspaper, founded in 1938 by Jawaharlal Nehru, by the youth section of the country’s main opposition force.
In June, the ED interrogated Rahul Gandhi for nearly 50 hours, “squeezing” him for five days, while Sonia Gandhi was heard in three successive hearings last week.
On all these occasions, representatives of the party demonstrated in the center of the capital, causing clashes with the police forces that led to dozens of detention of parliamentarians.
The accusation of tax fraud against the Gandhi dates back to ten years ago, when a member of the PJB, the party of Prime Minister Modi, presented the first complaint on the acquisition of the National Herald. Congress claims that the government uses the Enforcement Directorate in an instrumental way: the National Herald website reports today that, according to government data, since Modi’s arrival in power, the ED has opened 888 cases, of which only 23 have been ended with convictions.
