Iraq: Macron worried, call for dialogue

(ANSA) – PARIS, 02 AUG – The French president, Emmanuel Macron, expresses “strong concern” for the situation in Iraq, saying that he shares the call for dialogue launched by the Iraqi premier, Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

“Strong concern in the face of the situation in Iraq. Calm and moderation must prevail. I share the Prime Minister’s call for dialogue and consultation to respond to the aspirations of Iraqis”, declared the head of state in a tweet published in Arabic. according to the translation provided by the Elysée.

Since the legislative elections in October 2021, Iraq has been in the grip of political paralysis. Months of negotiations between the big parties did not allow the election of a new president of the Republic or a new government.

Supporters of Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr started a sit-in in front of parliament and his political rivals demonstrated by the thousands yesterday in Baghdad. In an appeal on TV last Saturday, Prime Minister al-Kazimi, who ensures current affairs, asked the political blocs to “sit down and negotiate and find an agreement”. (HANDLE).
