(ANSA) – TOKYO, 04 AUG – Torrential rains in large areas of central Japan, with evacuation orders for over 100 thousand residents, at least two people missing and interruptions in electricity and water supplies.
The meteorological agency, the media reported, raised the alert to the maximum level in the prefecture of Yamagata, in the northeast of the country, after the Mogami River broke its banks in several places, causing landslides and floods in the surrounding cities.
Government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno said at least two people are missing, and that 1,900 homes in Niigata are without electricity. Heavy rain in the area, 150 millimeters per hour, forced the Shinkansen superfast train services to suspend routes between Fukushima and Shinjo, while 107,000 people fled their homes in six prefectures of the archipelago.
