India: Rahul Gandhi accuses, ‘Modi tries to intimidate us’

(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, 04 AUG – “Premier Modi is trying to intimidate us, but he will not stop us”: Rahul Gandhi, president of the Congress Party, told the press today.

Yesterday the ED, the Indian tax agency, broke into the offices of the youth section of the opposition party and sealed them, while hundreds of policemen surrounded the headquarters of the Congress and the residence of Sonia Gandhi, making them inaccessible.

“They accuse us of tax fraud regarding the sale of the National Herald newspaper”, added Gandhi, “but it is a pretext: they are only trying to scare us in view of our national demonstration”.

Congress has called for a mobilization tomorrow to challenge the price of rice, unemployment and the increase in VAT on basic necessities.

Yesterday, an official from the Tax Agency said that the allegations of fraud against congressional leaders are based on the fact that the youth section of the party, owner of the National Herald, registered as an NGO, has not carried out any solidarity activities for years. (HANDLE).
