Drought: the alarm remains high in Portugal, mayors in the field

three months.

(ANSA) – LISBON, 04 AUG – The drought alarm continues in Portugal. Pending a government water efficiency plan, which the Ministry of the Environment has announced only for the next few weeks, several Portuguese cities and provinces are resorting to local ordinances to apply emergency measures and safeguard the availability of water for essential uses. .

Particularly affected are the inland areas, on the border with neighboring Spain, which has already started national prevention measures.

In the northern province of Bragança, a third of the more rural villages already use tankers to get supplies of water, which is scarce in the special basins. The Ranhados basin, around Viseu, on which the water supply of 20,000 inhabitants of three different cities depends, is below 20% of its capacity, while that of Arcossó, in Chaves, has cut off the supply of water for irrigation.

The municipality of Bragança is creating small community ponds, with non-potable water to be used for small domestic irrigation, while the mayor, who does not exclude rationing and heavier sanctions, has meanwhile launched an awareness campaign in which citizens are asked not to use mains water to water gardens, fill swimming pools or wash cars. Much of the province of Bragança, with about 35 thousand inhabitants, depends on the Serra Serrada basin which, if it does not rain, will have autonomy for only three months. (HANDLE).
