Since 1971 there have been six deadly bear attacks on Svalbard.

A polar bear has invaded a camp on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, in Arctic and attacked a tourist french, informed the local authorities this Monday, 8. “A bear entered a camp this morning around 06:30 (03:30 GMT) and wounded a Frenchwoman in the arm”, declared the local police chief, Stein Olav Bredli. “Your life is not in danger,” he added. The woman was part of an expedition with 25 people housed in tents in the west of the territory located approximately 1,000 kilometers from the North Pole. The tourist was rescued by helicopter to the hospital in Longyearbyen, the main town on the archipelago. According to Bredli, the group fired shots at the animal that got scared and “left the place”, however, the polar bear was later located and euthanized due to the magnitude of its wounds. Since 1971, six deadly bear attacks have been recorded. The last one, in which a 38-year-old Dutchman died, was in 2020. According to a 2015 count, approximately 1,000 polar bears live in the Norwegian sector of the Arctic, a protected species since 1973, and 300 of them live in the archipelago year-round. . Anyone going to Svalbard needs to be prepared for an eventual encounter with the bears, so it is mandatory to carry a rifle when leaving urban communities. According to experts, melting glaciers due to global warming is depriving polar bears of their favorite hunting grounds, where they feed on seals, and is bringing them closer to areas inhabited by humans in search of food.
