Kenya: elections, seats open for 22.1 million voters

(ANSA) – NAIROBI, 09 AUG – At six this morning (5 am Italian time) the polling stations opened for the seventh general elections in Kenya. There are 22.1 million citizens who can go to the polls to elect the President of the Republic, parliamentarians and representatives of the 47 counties.

Since at least an hour before, long queues have formed outside the polling stations, without particular problems of public order, after the tormented day yesterday with a section set on fire in the town of Mandera and a vehicle carrying ballots attacked north of Nairobi.

As reported by the national televisions that will cover the whole day non-stop, supporters of Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition given as favorite, started playing whistles and trumpets as early as 3 am, to wake up voters and convince them to vote.

His rival, Vice President William Ruto, was among the first to show up for the poll. “I voted early to avoid inconvenience with the crowd – he told the Daily Nation newspaper – Our prayer before the vote was for a peaceful election. I am also happy that this historic election inaugurates a new era for the country”. (HANDLE).
