Kenya: elections, crowd for Odinga in Nairobi slums

(ANSA) – NAIROBI, 09 AUG – Crowd in one of the slums of Nairobi, with thousands of cheering people passing towards the polling station of the candidate for president Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition who runs for the highest office of the state for the fifth time, the first as an ally of the outgoing government leader Uhuru Kenyatta.

Odinga voted in the slum of Kibera, one of the poorest constituencies in the capital, which has always supported him. In 2017, after the cancellation of the elections he obtained, it was from there that his supporters began to clash with the police and the final tally was over a hundred dead.

The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (Odm) has not made any statements. In his party, on the other hand, the tension rises due to the problems of non-regulatory ballots arrived in the counties of Mombasa and Kakamega, two well-known Odm strongholds. The party coordinator, Wycliffe Oparanya, spoke to the national media about “a plan to rig the elections in seats that are crucial for our victory”. (HANDLE).
