According to the census of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as of January 1 of this year the population recorded a drop of 0.57% to 125.93 million, which means over 726 thousand fewer people: the largest decline in percentage terms since the beginning. statistics.

Foreign residents also decreased, by 107 thousand units, for the second consecutive year, due to border restrictions introduced to try to stem the expansion of the coronavirus.

For the first time since 1975, the city of Tokyo also showed a decrease in residents of about 35 thousand units, in the face of the departures of foreign citizens during the health emergency.

Specifically, in 2021, deaths in the Land of the Rising Sun reached a record figure of 1.441 million, and births an all-time low of 812,000 children. People over 65 years of age make up 29% of the population in Japan, + 0.27% compared to a year earlier, a percentage never higher since 1994.
