(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 10 – In Burma the violence of armed groups, with generalized attacks against the civilian population, rages on women and children. The UN has documented “sexual and gender crimes, including rape and other forms of sexual violence, as well as torture of children, arbitrarily recruited and detained. ” Evidence of this violence was gathered by the UN independent investigative mechanism for Burma, in order to be used in possible criminal proceedings. The head of the investigative mechanism, Nicholas Koumjian, yesterday denounced “obvious crimes against humanity”.
Created by the UN Human Rights Council, this mechanism has gathered more than three million pieces of information from nearly 200 sources since it began operating three years ago, including statements from interviews, documents, videos, photographs, satellite images and material from the social media.
