(ANSA) – MEXICO CITY, AUGUST 14 – Elements of the Civil Guard, in collaboration with the army, arrested 164 people in Mexico, allegedly members of the Pueblos Unidos criminal cartel, for organizing roadblocks and for carrying illegal weapons from fire. The newspaper Excelsior writes it today.
In the operation, which took place in the municipality of Uruapan in the State of Michoacán, an arsenal of 124 rifles and 44 pistols was also seized along with 28 vehicles, one of which is armored.
Those arrested, who apparently were trying to take control of Uruapan and the nearby municipality of Parangaricutiro, are at the disposal of the Morelia Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The newspaper underlines that the operation, carried out yesterday, is one of the most important in recent years against criminal organizations operating in Michoacán. Pueblos Unidos is considered an extension of the Carteles Unidos organization, originally formed by the merger of the Tepalcatepec cartel with Los Viagras and other self-defense groups against the expansion in Michoacán of the powerful Jalisco Nueva Generación (Cjng) cartel.
