(ANSA) – MOSCOW, AUG 24 – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Russia’s main ally in the offensive in Ukraine, today sent a congratulatory message to the Ukrainian people on the occasion of Independence Day, his press service said. “I am convinced that the current differences will not be able to destroy the centuries-old basis of sincere and good neighborly relations between the peoples of the two countries,” said Lukashenko in the message. Belarus will continue to support the “strengthening of friendly contacts based on mutual respect at all levels” with Kiev, he assured him.

President Lukashenko, in power in Belarus since 1994, opened his country’s territory to the Russian army to allow them to launch an assault on Ukraine on February 24.

For his part, an advisor to the Ukrainian presidency, Mikhailo Podoliak, called the congratulations “a hoax”.

“It seems that Lukashenko really believes that the world is not aware of his active participation in crimes against Ukraine,” Podoliak wrote on Twitter, denouncing a “cynical” message that “will have consequences”. (HANDLE).
