Syria, ready to exchange ambassadors with Donbass republics

(ANSA) – BEIRUT, AUGUST 24 – The Syrian foreign minister, Faysal al Miqdad, in recent days on an official visit to Russia, announced in the last few hours that “soon” the exchange of ambassadors between the Syrian government and those of the two (self-proclaimed) republics of Donbass: Donetsk and Lugansk.

Syria recognized on June 29 “the independence and sovereignty” of the two republics involved on the front line in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moscow and Damascus have been united for more than half a century by a strategic military and political alliance.

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has supported the stay in power of the Syrian president, Bashar al Assad, strongly contested at home since 2011, the year of the outbreak of the Syrian war, which is still ongoing. Russia intervened militarily in Syria to defend its strategic interests in the eastern Mediterranean in October 2015. (ANSA).
