Burma: former British ambassador arrested

The former British ambassador to Burma was arrested by the Burmese authorities. A diplomatic source to the AFP has made it known. Vicky Bowman, who served between 2002 and 2006, was arrested yesterday in Rangoon, the country’s economic capital at the center of violent conflicts after the February 1, 2021 coup, according to the source, which requested the anonymity.
According to the same diplomatic source, the British authorities also arrested her husband, the Burmese artist Htein Lin, a former political prisoner. “We are concerned about the arrest of a British woman in Burma,” a British embassy spokesperson told AFP. “We are in contact with local authorities and are providing the necessary consular assistance,” she continued. Local media reported that the couple, who have meanwhile been transferred to Insein prison in Rangoon, have been arrested for allegedly violating immigration laws, a crime involving up to five years in prison. A spokesman for the junta declined to comment on the matter.
