Sweden: Gotland bomber wanted to kill centrist leader

(ANSA) – STOCKHOLM, AUG 26 – The Gotland bomber, Theodor Engström, wanted to kill the leader of Centerpartiet, the Swedish centrist party. This was declared by the party leader herself, Annie Lööf, who, due to the ongoing investigations, cannot give further details.

The man is in prison on charges of terrorism and of killing the famous Swedish psychiatrist Ing-Marie Wieselgren in Visby, on the island of Gotland, on July 7th. The attack took place during Almedalen, known as the week of democracy, where politicians, experts and leaders meet with citizens in the streets.

The political leaders of the various parties expressed their closeness and solidarity to the colleague. Annie Lööf has been the leader of the centrist party for over 10 years: during her tenure, the party moved away from its historic center-right position to support the center-left coalition.

The leader recently declared her support for Magdalena Andersson, the Social Democratic prime minister, ahead of the Swedish parliamentary elections on 11 September.

The bomber Engström is linked to far-right movements, including the neo-Nazis of the Nordic Resistance Movement, according to several Swedish media reports. (HANDLE).
