Mexico: 8 deaths in shooting between drug cartel leaders

(ANSA) – MEXICO CITY, AUGUST 26 – The final toll of eight deaths in the fire fight that took place Wednesday in the western Mexican state of Michoacán between armed groups belonging to rival leaders of a powerful drug trafficking cartel. This was reported today by the newspaper La Jornada.

The episode, confirmed the Undersecretary for Security and Protection of Citizens, Ricardo Mejia, took place in the municipality of Tuzantla, and involved two leaders of the Cartel known as La Familia Michoacana.

The undersecretary explained that the clash between members of the same criminal group arose from the killing, a few weeks ago, of the boss Medardo Hernández Vera, aka ‘Lalo Mantecas’.

And this, he added, has sharpened disputes between two factions of the Familia Michoacana, headed by a leader named El Chaparro and another individual nicknamed El Pez, who were at the center of the shooting.

Mejia added that the police and military have mobilized in the area arresting five men and a woman who are under investigation for their alleged participation in the firefight.

Recently in the state of Michoacán there have been several security operations, the most important of which led to the red flag arrest of 168 people, linked to the criminal gang Pueblos Unidos, who intended to launch an attack on the Michoacana Family. (HANDLE).
