Israel: Lapid speaks at gay event and sets precedent

(ANSA) – TEL AVIV, AUG 28 – A message of greeting to an event organized by the gay community was pronounced yesterday by Prime Minister Yair Lapid. This was reported by the Times of Israel, according to which this was the first time that an Israeli prime minister participated in a demonstration in support of the LGBT community.

“Everyone has the fundamental right to be a parent and to form a family,” said Lapid, who is the leader of the secular centrist party Yesh Atid. Speaking at a meeting of the Igy (Israeli gay youth) movement on the 20th anniversary of its foundation, Lapid argued that most Israelis are now in favor of civil and same-sex marriages. “My government – he then assured him, amid the applause of the audience – is determined to fight against any form of violence or hatred against the LGBT community. Homophobes and racists are losing their game”.

Lapid has led a transitional government since July in view of elections scheduled for early November. (HANDLE).
