A container ship Zim Kingston, carrying chemicals for the mining industry, caught fire on the border between the United States and Canada. Experts are working on assessing the situation.

According to Reuters, sixteen crew members were evacuated, while five remained on board to extinguish the fire. Ten containers are currently on fire and the fire continues to spread, but the ship itself is not on fire.

Also, the Canadian Coast Guard is working with American colleagues to track 40 containers that fell overboard.

“This is very worrying. The ship and containers are very close to Victoria, British Columbia and a big storm is expected tonight. We are concerned that this could be another environmental disaster.”– said the head of the environmental organization Surfrider. Foundation Canada David Boudino.

Fires on ships
