Bomb attack in Jerusalem first in six years

Bomb attacks on Jerusalem left at least one dead and 14 injured this Wednesday, 23, according to the Israeli police. An explosion at a bus stop on the way out injured 12 people. A second explosion at another point destroyed a vehicle and injured three people, according to authorities. The fatal victim is a man who was seriously injured in one of the attacks and died in Shaare Zedek hospital. “It is the price of the crimes and aggressions of Israel against the Palestinian people,” Hamas said in a statement. “We heard a loud explosion. We immediately attended the scene and observed two seriously injured people, a 16-year-old teenager at a bus stop and a 45-year-old person on a nearby sidewalk,” said rescuer Moshe Tobolsky. The last bomb attack in Jerusalem took place in 2016, according to Israel’s Internal Security Service, Shin Beth.

In view of the incident, Prime Minister Yair Lapid called an emergency meeting at the army headquarters in Tel Aviv and report the Security situation to his designated successor, Benjamin Netanyahu, who won the November 1 legislative elections. “We have to form a government as soon as possible, because terrorism doesn’t wait,” said Itamar Ben Gvir, a far-right leader who wants to take over as minister of public security. He asked the authorities for an operation of “targeted killings” of suspected terrorists. Without claiming responsibility for the attacks, the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip, “celebrated” the attacks, which it called “the price of Israel’s crimes and aggressions against our people.”
