THE NASA released satellite images showing the Ukraine in the dark due to the attacks of Russia that destroyed some of the country’s energy infrastructure amid the onset of winter. The images, captured throughout the month, show the Earth’s surface in the region under conditions of darkness. City lights can be seen in detail daily in the images. On Wednesday, the 23rd, Ukrainian authorities said three nuclear power plants were shut down after the latest wave of Russian missile strikes against Ukrainian power facilities and millions of Ukrainians spent Thursday without electricity. Half of the inhabitants of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, remained without electricity this Friday, 25, two days after Russian bombings against strategic infrastructure, informed the mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko. “Experts continue to restore the power system in the capital. Half of consumers are still without electricity,” Klitschko wrote in Telegram. “Throughout the day, power companies plan to connect electricity to all consumers in alternation,” he said, as temperatures approached zero with rain. The chairman of the board of directors of the national electricity operator, Ukrenergo, Volodimir Kudriski, considered that the Ukrainian energy system “went through the most difficult moment” after the attack. “All regions are being restored, the energy system is again connected to the European Union energy system,” he said on Facebook. Officials across the border in Moldova said electricity was also lost in more than half of their country, the first time a neighboring state has reported such extensive damage from the war in Ukraine triggered by Russia’s invasion nine months ago.
