The deputy of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party, María Clemente García, proposed this Tuesday, 06, in the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico what Lionel Messi be declared “persona non grata” in the country. The justification of García, a member of the Mexican president’s party Andres Manuel Lopez Obradoris based on the video that leaked on social media in which Messi puts a Mexico national team shirt on the floor of the locker room after Argentina’s victory over Mexico in the group stage of the Qatar World Cup🇧🇷 This video caused controversy among supporters and the press because the PSG accidentally steps on his shirt, something that even led to Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez threatening to hit Messi. Shortly afterwards, however, the super middleweight champion backtracked and apologized to the Argentine. “(Messi) showed not only an evident contempt, but also a disrespect towards the colors that allude to what makes up our country’s flag, which from the sovereign point of view can be considered a conduct that constitutes an affront to our national identity” , states the legislator’s justification.

María Clemente García is one of the first two trans deputies in Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, along with her colleague Salma Luévano. So far, neither the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs nor Mexican Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard have commented on the matter. Ebrard is one of the main promoters of Mexico’s candidacy for the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games. In addition, the chancellor is one of the candidates to succeed López Obrador at the end of his six-year term in 2024, which would make him president when the Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly organized with the United States and Canada. Mexico was eliminated in the group stage of the Qatar Cup, after drawing with Poland, losing to Argentina and defeating Saudi Arabia.
