Former Peruvian president sent ‘best wishes for the purpose of strengthening democracy’ after the victory of the leftist candidate in Brazil
Pedro Castillo was removed from office after an attempt classified by Congress as a ‘self-coup’
The former president of Peru🇧🇷 Pedro Castillo, who was arrested this Wednesday, 7th, after Congress judged his latest decisions as a coup d’état, was an ally of Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), president-elect who takes office on January 1st. Castillo had even been invited to participate in the inauguration ceremony. By winning the elections on October 30, Lula received the support of the former president of Peru. On the occasion, on his Twitter he declared: “best wishes for the purpose of strengthening democracy, the economy, social inclusion and sustainable development”. The same gesture left Lula when Castillo won the presidential elections in June 2021. Through a statement, the petista wrote: “We salute the Peruvian people for choosing as president the defender of an anti-neoliberal and popular project, a leftist and progressive political vision, to change the course of the country and place people’s needs above market demands. As a party that has already demonstrated that it is possible to combat hunger and extreme poverty, provide more education and health for its people, build decent housing, fight for democracy and social justice, while maintaining economic growth, the PT expresses its support for the future government of Pedro Castillo and wishes it success on its path towards egalitarian and democratic social and economic growth in Peru.” Castillo was arrested in the fourth hour after trying to dissolve Parliament and declare a state of excellence. Congress ignored the then-president’s order as an “unconstitutional act” and an attempt at self-coup.
