Castillo was ousted this week after trying to dissolve the Peruvian Congress.

Judge of the Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation of the PeruJuan Carlos Checkley decreed seven days of preventive detention for the deposed president of the country, Pedro Castillo, this Thursday, the 8th. He was accused of rebellion and conspiracy after an unsuccessful attempt at a self-coup d’état. The magistrate’s resolution also provides that the period of preventive detention will be in force from December 7 to 13. The Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office considered that there is a risk of flight and cited article 45 of the Peruvian law, which establishes that “no person, organization or armed force may assume the exercise of State power, which constitutes the crime of rebellion or sedition. There is also rebellion when there is a change in the form of government, and he wanted to make an emergency government, dissolved the congress of the republic, called elections to establish a constituent congress”, wrote the representatives in a court decision. The document also states that various criminal acts related to corruption were publicized through the media in which Castillo allegedly participated as the alleged leader of a criminal organization that had entrenched itself in the spheres of State Power. The deposed president had already been arrested on Wednesday, 7, after trying to dissolve the country’s Congress, after being accused of acts of corruption. However, the plenary of Parliament, in an extraordinary session, approved the removal of the politician from office. He tried to flee but was detained by police officers, who pointed a gun and declared the arrest. Castillo was transported by helicopter from the city of Lima to the base of the Special Operations Directorate of the police, in the district of Ate, where he will be detained for up to 15 days, under investigation. Outside the police station, despite the turmoil, there were only small-scale clashes between protesters and riot police. Legislators also emphasized that the climate remains calm in the country and that there is no movement of the Armed Forces. As Jovem Pan showed, with the decision of the Congress, vice-president Dina Boluarte was summoned to assume the position. She will be the first woman to hold the position.
