Born in Rio de Janeiro and with a degree in law from Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira, 71, has also served as Brazilian ambassador in Argentina from 2004 to 2010 and in the United States from 2010 to 2015, and was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2015 to 2016 during the government of Dilma Rousseff (PT). Now, he returns to power in 2023. In the Cup, Brazil lost on penalties to Croatia in the quarterfinals, after finishing the game, which went to extra time, tied at 1 to 1.
