A little over 20 days to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine complete one year, European Union announced this Thursday, 2, during a visit to Kiev, which plans to impose new sanctions on Russia on the occasion of the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24. “Alongside our G7 partners, we will introduce an additional price cap on products derived from Russian oil. And for February 24th, exactly one year after the start of the invasion, we want to have the 10th sanctions package in force”, declared Von der Leyen, during a press conference with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. “Currently, Russia pays a heavy price as our sanctions erode the economy and set it back a generation,” said the European leader. Von der Leyen also used the moment to reaffirm that the EU will continue to support Ukraine in the war. “We are here, together, to show that the EU stands behind Ukraine as firmly as ever. And to further deepen our support and cooperation,” she added.

Among the new rounds of sanctions for the Russians is the capping of the price of a barrel of Russian crude oil for export at $60. According to Von der Leyen, this measure, implemented in early December by the European Union, the G7 and Australia, costs Moscow “around 160 million euros a day”. Von der Leyen is in Kiev accompanied by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, and 15 European commissioners who will meet with Ukrainian government officials – this is the fourth time she has visited the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the conflict. The Commission called the visit a “strong symbol” of European support for Ukraine “in the face of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression”. Ukraine, a candidate for membership of the EU, will receive on Friday, 3rd, a summit meeting with the participation, in addition to Ursula von der Leyen, of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
