Brazilian Consul Denis Fontes de Souza Pinto classified the episode as “a sad case of a psychotic break”
A 42-year-old Brazilian was arrested this Monday, the 20th, after invading the Brazilian Consulate in Buenos Aires and threatening officials. According to authorities, the man required a passport to “escape”. In an interview with RFI, the Brazilian consul in Buenos Aires, Denis Fontes de Souza Pinto, classified the episode as “a sad case of a psychotic break”. “The Brazilian said it was an urgent case. That’s why they let him go up to the Consulate. He’s a homeless drifter, but he had a normal appearance. He did not have the necessary documents for issuing a passport. When he heard a negative, he went into a trance. An impressive thing. It got very aggressive. It was a sad case of a psychotic break,” he said. The Brazilian entered the consulate around 11 am and demanded a passport, claiming that he “needed to flee to another country because he was being persecuted in Brazil”. The Brazilian had an identity card. However, he did not have the necessary documents for issuing a passport, other than the money to cover the expenses for the document. “The story made no sense. At first he said he was American, then Italian. It was none of those things. He is Brazilian. Out of his mind, he threatened to ‘disrupt’ the official. Our fear was that he would break the glass that separates the public from the employees. We cannot say that what he said corresponds to reality. The police even told us that”, commented the consul.
