Swedish Court of Appeal upholds life sentence in spying for Russia case

In Sweden, a court upheld a decision on life imprisonment for a former member of the country’s intelligence services, accused of spying for the aggressor state Russia. This decision was taken by the Court of Appeal on Thursday, May 25.

About it writes the edition Reuters. We are talking about 42-year-old Peiman Kia, one of two brothers convicted in January 2023. The second defendant, 35-year-old Payam, received nine years and 10 months in prison.

The Stockholm District Court found that the brothers had been spying for the Russian Federation for more than ten years and passed secret data to the aggressor country and its special services. This happened from 2011 to 2021.

Payam Kia, like his brother, first also filed an appeal against the court’s verdict, but withdrew the appeal last week.

Peyman and Payam were born in Iran, moved to Sweden as children, and received the citizenship of this country in 1994. For ten years, they passed on classified information and collaborated with the GRU (Russian military intelligence). For the provided “services” they received gold and money.

The husband served, among other things, in one of the most secret departments, which deals with working with agents operating undercover abroad. Immediately at the time of his arrest, Peyman was the chief of security at the Food Bureau.

As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported, in March 2023, another Russian spy was detained in Poland, collecting data on critical infrastructure. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
