China: Red hackers target websites of rival countries

As a group of Chinese-sponsored hackers have been accused by the United States and its Western allies of having infiltrated American critical infrastructure, Beijing denounces a disinformation campaign. Yet hackers close to the Chinese army are regularly at work.

The United States and its Western allies have accused a Chinese-sponsored hacker group of infiltrating US critical infrastructure. Allegations firmly denied by Beijing, which denounces a disinformation campaign. Yet hackers close to the Chinese army are regularly on the job and even France is not spared from their attacks.

“They have been doing this for more than 10 years with great success”

They are called Stone Panda, Double Dragon or in recent computer attacks Volt Typhoon. These battalions of hackers work in the shadows but their links with the Chinese army are pointed out by Western secret services, in particular French military intelligence, which published a report on this Chinese computer threat in 2021. China obviously denies being behind this operation targeting critical American infrastructure, including the Guam military base. But cybersecurity experts note similarities between the techniques used by the group and those associated with Chinese military cyber espionage operations.

“China is launching computer attacks not only on US government agencies to spy on them but also on US companies to steal trade secrets from them. They have been doing this for more than 10 years with great success,” informs a computer expert from a American company in Beijing. The nerve center of this battle led by China is base 311. Hidden behind the address of a simple swimming pool in the city of Fuzhou opposite Taiwan, it was created in 2005 to centralize these computer warfare operations.
