(ANSA) – ROME, NOVEMBER 07 – A total of 172 “asylum seekers”, mainly from African countries, including unaccompanied minors, have been evacuated to Niger from Libya, thanks to the resumption of humanitarian flights. This was announced by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
“Among the displaced, many have been detained in terrible conditions, have been victims of trafficking or have suffered violence in Libya,” a statement read. “The displaced people said they were relieved to leave Libya,” adds UNHCR, which specifies that the group is made up of families, children traveling alone and a baby born a few weeks ago.
The 172 people – mainly from Eritrea, South Sudan and Sudan – have been evacuated thanks to a UNHCR emergency mechanism that allows vulnerable refugees to leave Libya while the UN agency can find them “lasting accommodation”. At the end of October, Libya authorized the resumption of humanitarian flights, which had been suspended for almost a year. (HANDLE).
