Preparations for a Ukrainian counter-offensive are complete, but the loss of human life could be heavy because of Russian air superiority, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview published this Saturday, June 3 by the “Wall Street Journal”. “In my opinion, from today, we are ready (…) We firmly believe that we will succeed”he adds, specifying that he did not know “how long will it take”.
However, he warns that the offensive will be “dangerous” without increased Western aid to counter Russian air attacks. “Everyone knows that a counter-offensive without air superiority is very dangerous”, insists the Ukrainian president. Only one weapon, the American Patriot surface-to-air missile system, can protect Ukrainian skies, he adds, calling for more such weapons to be delivered to his country.
“A weapon robs Russia of its ability to intimidate tens of millions of people: the Patriots missiles”did he declare.
No NATO membership during the war
In view of the NATO summit to be held in Vilnius, Lithuania, next month, he admitted to having understood that it was not possible for his country to join the Atlantic Alliance during the Russian invasion.
