“One of the ways to help”: Latvia has already handed over to Ukraine 66 cars confiscated from drunk drivers

The Latvian government continues to transfer cars confiscated from drunk drivers free of charge to Ukraine. To date, 66 such vehicles have already been transferred.

This is reported by the local edition of Delfi, citing data from the State Insurance of Latvia. This is one of the ways Latvia helps Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.

“According to the law “On Support for the Civilian Population of Ukraine”, vehicles of the Latvian state can be transferred free of charge to the ownership of the government of Ukraine in order to help prevent the consequences of an emergency situation related to hostilities in Ukraine,” the message says.

Corresponding changes to the Latvian Criminal Code came into force in November last year. They provide for criminal liability with confiscation of the vehicle for driving or learning to drive if the concentration of alcohol in the exhaled air or blood test exceeds 1.5. Also, criminal liability is provided for driving a vehicle or learning to drive a vehicle while intoxicated with narcotic, psychotropic, toxic or other intoxicating substances.

Earlier, GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported that in early March 2023, the Latvian government decided to transfer cars confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukraine free of charge. The first eight vehicles were received by the army units of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital and the territorial medical association of the Kupyansk City Council.
