Images of the incident between a Chinese ship and an American destroyer in the Taiwan Strait

The US Navy accused, on Saturday June 3, a Chinese ship of having zigzagged in a ” dangerous around one of its destroyers which was sailing through the Taiwan Strait in the company of a Canadian ship.

“Dangerous maneuvers”

The Chinese building has “executed maneuvers in a dangerous manner near the Chung-Hoon”an American destroyer that was sailing in the strait, the American command said in a statement.

The Chinese ship “passed the Chung-Hoon on the port side and crossed her bow at 150 meters. The Chung-Hoon maintained its course and slowed to 10 knots to avoid a collision”, reports the press release. The Chinese vessel would then have passed in front of the Chung-Hoon’s bow a second time.

China, for its part, accuses the United States of creating intentionally unrest in the Taiwan Strait”denounced Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the Eastern Command of China.

Growing tensions

This is not the first moment of friction between the two powers in the region: on May 26, less than ten days before the maritime incident, a pilot of a Chinese fighter plane carried out “an unjustified aggressive maneuver” near a US reconnaissance aircraft flying over the South China Sea, US military officials said.

According to Chinese military spokesman, the American plane “deliberately burst in” in a training area in China “to carry out reconnaissance operations”.
