Turkey: Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk investigated for insults in Ataturk

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, 08 NOV – The Smyrna prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation against the latest novel by the Turkish Nobel prize-winning writer Orhan Pamuk for alleged insults contained in the text against the founder of the Republic of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The investigation was opened following the complaint of Tarcan Uluk’s lawyer according to which ‘Veba Geceleri’ (‘The nights of the plague’, in Turkish, forthcoming in Italy) would contain not only insults to Ataturk, considered a crime in Turkey , but also hate speech.

“I have not written anything that has implications with Ataturk and I do not accept the allegations,” the writer told the prosecutor according to various Turkish media reports. The complaint that triggered the investigation also refers to some statements regarding Kurds and Armenians that Pamuk released to a Swiss newspaper and for which he had already been put on trial in the past with similar accusations.
