Migrants: A thousand cross La Mancha, three missing

(ANSA) – LONDON, NOV 12 – A thousand migrants crossed the English Channel on Thursday aboard boats to reach the United Kingdom, setting a new record for crossings in a single day, the BBC reported.

According to the maritime prefecture, three people are missing after trying to cross the Channel aboard a kayak, according to other migrants who managed to arrive.

They could not be located last night and the searches are not expected to resume today.

The migrants who made it were escorted to Dover by five rescue boats and four border force ships.

A Whitehall source accused France of having lost control of the situation. British officials say they want to stop the crossings, which they consider dangerous and unnecessary.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said yesterday’s number of crossings is “unacceptable.” The previous record had been 853 people in one day, on November 3.

“British citizens have had enough of watching people die in La Mancha as ruthless criminal gangs exploit their misery. Our new immigration plan will repair the broken system that encourages migrants to make this deadly journey,” the spokesperson said.

More than 23,000 people made the crossing from France to the United Kingdom on board this year, a sharp increase from 8,404 in 2020 and much more than in the years before the pandemic, when most of the asylum seekers arrived by plane, ferry or train.
