Netherlands Announces Return of Three-Week Restrictions to Contain Covid-19

Bars, restaurants and supermarkets may only be open until 8 pm, and non-essential stores until 6 pm

A Holland announced the return of restrictions on the movement of citizens to try to combat the Covid-19 this Friday, 12. The prime minister of the European country, Mark Rutte, made the announcement of the measures, which will be valid for three weeks, during a speech on TV. “We bring a difficult message, with measures that reach everyone. The virus is everywhere and needs to be fought”, explained Rutte. The measures include the cancellation of events and the reduction in the opening hours of bars, restaurants and supermarkets, which will be open until 8 pm, and less essential stores, until 6 pm. Schools, cinemas, theaters and concert halls will remain open.

The Netherlands sees an increase in the number of new cases of the disease: it surpassed the mark of 16 thousand for the second consecutive day this Friday, breaking the record of December 20, when 12,997 infections were registered. Deaths are low, with 32 deaths in 24 hours – the record was on April 6, when 232 people died by Covid-19. The weekly moving averages are around 10,000 new cases daily and 25 deaths every 24 hours. According to data from the Our World In Data platform, 72.1% of the country’s total population has already been fully vaccinated.
