Serbia: in Belgrade rallies for and against Mladic mural

(ANSAmed) – BELGRADE, NOVEMBER 13 – New opposing rallies for and against a large mural by Ratko Mladic took place in the evening in Belgrade, with the police present in force who separated the opposing groups avoiding possible accidents.

The large mural celebrating the former Bosnian Serb general, sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes and against humanity, primarily for the Srebrenica genocide and the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war of 1992-1995, has been at the center of protests and controversies in recent days. An activist was detained for a few hours after throwing eggs at Mladic’s effigy, which was later vandalized with white paint. The mural was later cleaned up by supporters of the former general.

Controversy arose over the presence of the police, accused of intervening in defense of the mural.

Under the slogan ‘The mural must disappear’, groups of human rights activists gathered in the evening to protest against the glorification of war criminals and to demand support for a ‘wave of anti-fascism’ in Serbia. Militants of the NGO ‘Women in Black’ were present, with a large banner reading ‘We can never forget the Srebrenica genocide’. A short distance away, a few dozen young ultra-nationalists in black overalls and masks chanted ‘Ratko Mladic’, ‘Ratko Mladic’ for a long time, hurling insults and insults at the other demonstrators.

There were moments of tension but the police, with a massive cordon, avoided contacts and possible clashes.
