The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, did not hide this Saturday, 13, the disappointment with the final text of the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), considering that the goals were not achieved during the summit. “We were unable to achieve the objectives of this summit”, said the Portuguese, who admitted that “important steps were taken”, but that they ended up not being greater due to a lack of political will. The UN secretary-general manifested himself, through recorded video, shortly after the announcement of the approval of the Glasgow Climate Pact, in the United Kingdom, where the COP26 takes place. “What was approved is a compromise, which reflects contradictions and the state of politics in the world today”, lamented Guterres.

A last minute deal between China, USA e India, changing the language of one of the main paragraphs of the text. The statement about “phasing out” of carbon was changed to “phasing out”. The change was greeted with surprise by most delegates present at COP26, with many delegates pointing to the lack of transparency in the negotiations between the three countries. “I reaffirm my conviction that we must end subsidies for fossil fuels”, defended the Portuguese. In addition, Guterres celebrated the agreement between the US and China, announced this week, that they will work together to reduce emissions during the 2020s, as well as a commitment to globally end deforestation.
