(ANSA) – LONDON, NOVEMBER 16 – An ephemeral conversion. This is what seems to emerge from the past of Emad Al Swealmeen, the 32-year-old refugee in the United Kingdom of Middle Eastern origins, protagonist of the terrorist attack – perhaps suicide – in Liverpool.
At least according to the rectorate of the Anglican cathedral of the British city.
In relation to media reports on the matter, it confirms today that in fact Emad – born Muslim and died on Sunday as a result of the explosion of a rudimentary device which he was apparently trying to finish assembling on board a taxi – was in effects baptized in the same cathedral in 2015; and therefore “confirmed” with confirmation and definitive admission to the new confession in 2017. But who had already stopped attending church in 2018 and lost all contact with the community: despite the convictions on the sincerity of his change of religion by the devoted English spouses who for a time had given him hospitality as an asylum seeker. In a subsequent note, Reverend Sue Jones, pastor of the church in question, was dismayed and surprised by the news of Al Swealmeen’s membership in his congregation at the time. “Like everyone in the city – he wrote – we were horrified by the actions of this individual. Clearly we cannot make any assumptions about his motives. What is clear is that his actions do not represent us as a community and that we are united with the whole city and the whole country in the commitment to work for peace while we continue to pray for Liverpool “.
