(ANSA-AFP) – STOCKHOLM, NOV 22 – The Swedish Parliament will vote on Wednesday on the designation of the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Magdalena Andersson, as the country’s first female prime minister. This was announced today by the President of the Parliament.
However, there remains a possibility that Andersson will not get enough votes, as he has yet to secure the support of the Left Party despite difficult negotiations in recent days. The 54-year-old, current finance minister, needs the party’s votes to be confirmed in the place of outgoing prime minister Stefan Lofven.
Andersson has already received support from partners in the ruling coalition, the Greens, as well as the Center Party.
In exchange for its support, however, the Left Party asked for an agreement on higher pensions.
“We Social Democrats and Greens are obviously ready to discuss further improvements for those with the weakest pensions,” Andersson said during a joint press conference with Speaker of Parliament Andreas Norlen.
“The question is how far you can go,” he added.
