Brazil: narcos-police clashes in Rio favela, at least 9 dead

(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, NOV 22 – At least nine people died, including eight alleged criminals and a police officer, after gun battles between drug traffickers and law enforcement officers which took place this weekend in the Complexo de Salgueiro, one favela ‘in the metropolitan area of ​​Rio de Janeiro.

Residents of the area said they had removed eight bodies from an enclosed vegetation area, according to TV Globo.

“The Bope (Special Operations Battalion of the military police, ed) was activated over the weekend: it was a very particular blitz, in a swampy area, we collected weapons from organized crime”, the spokesman for the military police, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Blaz.

The operation took place after a police sergeant intent on patrolling the area was killed by thugs on Saturday.

For now, investigators exclude that there was a reprisal following the murder of the agent.

A slum resident has meanwhile argued that the bodies “have been dumped on top of each other” and that there are “signs of a carnage,” as reported by the G1 news portal. (HANDLE).
