India: Parliament repeals agricultural reforms contested by peasants

(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, NOV 29 – The Indian Parliament abrogated the agricultural trade reform, contested by the peasants, with a vote in both chambers, in a one-year protest. The cancellation of the three laws that liberalized the sale of countryside products was the first act of the winter session of the Indian chambers, which opened today and will continue for 26 days.

Prime Minister Modi had announced the choice two weeks ago, after the government had remained firm in its positions for twelve months and had insisted on the advantages for farmers of the new methods of sale.

The work was suspended after the opposition parties vigorously contested the modalities of the vote, which took place without any discussion, and filled the room with slogans such as “Jai Kisan”, (long live the peasants); the opposition also asked that, together with the cancellation of the measures, the decree on the MSP, the minimum guaranteed price that allows farmers to count on a limited but secure income, be approved.

Farmers’ organizations reiterated that they will not stop the protest until the MSP is law: “We owe it to the 750 farmers who lost their lives during the battle,” they said (ANSA).
