Omicron: Australia, first case transmitted locally

(ANSA) – SYDNEY, 03 DEC – Australia today registered the first case of the Omicron variant of the locally transmitted coronavirus: a student from Sydney, who has never been abroad, tested positive for the South African variant despite the imposed ban by the authorities at the entry of non-residents in the country and restrictions on flights from southern Africa. This was announced by the health authorities of New South Wales.

The patient “has never traveled abroad, nor has any ties to people who have traveled abroad”, announced in a New South Wales Health statement, underlining, however, that further investigations and tracing of people are underway. .

Prior to this case, Australia had identified nine infections related to the Omicron variant, all found in people from abroad. The school attended by the infected student – Regents Park Christian School, in a western suburb of Sydney – has been closed and the boy’s family has been quarantined. There are currently around 2,000 cases of Covid per day in Australia. (HANDLE).
