Sudan: police throw tear gas on protesters

(ANSA) – KHARTOUM, 06 DEC – Sudanese police today launched tear gas on thousands of demonstrators marching against the military-led government near the presidential palace in the capital Khartoum, as witnesses told the AFP agency. Protesters came from various districts of the capital, and many of them carried flags and chanted against the army government.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan led the military coup on 25 October. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was first placed under house arrest and then, following international condemnation and mass protests, returned to his post after an agreement signed on 21 November.

But this agreement between general and premier has raised the accusation of “traitor” made against Hamdok by pro-democracy activists. The premier defended the agreement, signed after his release, saying that it “stops the bloodbath” following the repression of protests after the coup, so as “not to waste the achievements of the last two years”. About 45 protesters were killed between 25 October and 22 November in clashes with the security forces, while hundreds were injured. (HANDLE).
