Covid: Brazil, pre-carnival gatherings alarm experts

(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, 06 DEC – The gatherings that take place in many cities continue to be the subject of controversy in Brazil despite the calls for caution by the health authorities for the coronavirus pandemic that is still underway.

In recent days in Rio de Janeiro, for example, the crowd has stormed the musical performances organized in various points of the metropolis for the National Samba Day, officially celebrated on December 2 but with prolonged festivities throughout the weekend, as has Cnn Brasil took over.

For the occasion, three stages with numerous concerts were installed, while 15 ‘rodas de samba’ took place in as many districts scattered in the northern part of Rio.

Although access was allowed only to vaccinated people, few spectators wore masks (still mandatory in the Carioca city in case of gatherings) and maintained social distancing between them.

The offending commemoration, which served as a “warming test” for the 2022 carnival, worries experts not only for the emergence of cases of the Omicron variant, but also for the flu outbreak in the meantime that broke out in the city.
