Vaccines: WHO, less than 0.25% of expired doses in Africa

(ANSA) – ROME, DEC 14 – The regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa says it denies the reports that vaccines on the continent are wasted, explaining that less than 0.25 percent of doses made available to Africa have expired.

“It is necessary to dispel the impression that, even though we are raising concerns about access to vaccine supplies, there are millions of wasted and expiring doses in Africa,” WHO regional director said in a press conference. for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, reports CNN. “That’s not the case,” he added. In fact, the authorities of Senegal and Nigeria recently declared the destruction of 200,000 and nearly one million expired doses respectively.

Moeti analyzed the number of vaccines received, administered and expired in Africa. “We have received approximately 434 million doses in Africa, approximately 264 million doses administered, approximately 61 percent of those received, and 910,000 vaccines have expired in 20 countries. This represents less than 0.25 percent of the doses received in Africa.” he explained, adding that the main challenge on the continent continues to be “access to vaccine supplies” and that “planning the dose delivery operation has been extremely challenging for African countries”. For Moeti, “there is now great concern to ensure that vaccines delivered to African countries have an adequate shelf life”, so as to ensure delivery that minimizes the risk of their expiration.
