Showdown by militiamen in Tripoli, vote at risk in Libya

(ANSA) – ROME, DECEMBER 16 – Libya for almost 11 years, prey to divisions and civil wars, has experienced another night of tension that has led to fears of a coup d’état by the militias, but which then ended in a mere demonstration of strength in the context of a power struggle in Tripoli, a few days before the elections scheduled for December 24, which appear to be increasingly at risk.

The mobilization of militiamen, made disturbing by gunshots but with no casualties or injuries reported, occurred a few hours after General Abdelkader Mansour took office as the new military commander of the Tripoli region on the orders of the Presidential Council, the summit of the provisional Libyan institutional structure.

Meanwhile, a member of the Libyan Electoral Commission (Hnec), Abubaker Marda, told Al Jazeera TV that holding the Libyan elections as early as December 24 “has become impossible”, also because the Commission has not yet announced the final lists of candidates or for presidential or parliamentary elections.
