Covid: Turkey will send 15 million vaccines to Africa

(ANSA) – ISTAMBUL, 18 DEC – Turkey will send 15 million doses of the anti Covid vaccine to Africa: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today during a summit of the leaders of the continent, adding that the low vaccination rates in Africa constitute a “shame” for humanity.

Ankara has invested heavily in developing trade and diplomatic relations with the poorest continent in the world during Erdogan’s rule as prime minister and then as president since 2003.

“We are aware of the global injustice in accessing the Covid-19 vaccine and the unfair treatment of Africa,” Erdogan said in his opening speech at the summit: “It is shameful for humanity that only 6% of the African population has been vaccinated, “he added.

Turkey is developing its own vaccine, known as Turkovac, which is about to receive approval for emergency use. After its authorization, the president explained, the vaccine will be shared with Africa. It is unclear whether Turkey will also send doses of the internationally approved vaccines it is currently using to the continent in the meantime. (HANDLE).
