(ANSAMed) – BEIRUT, DECEMBER 20 – The Lebanese have the right to know the truth about the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut which killed 220 people on 4 August 2020. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said this today in Lebanon from yesterday to Wednesday on a visit to the battered Mediterranean country, afflicted by the worst economic crisis in recent decades.
Guterres went to the explosion site this morning and placed a wreath of flowers. “The Lebanese must know the truth. And it is necessary that an impartial and transparent investigation be conducted on this tragic event to ensure justice,” the secretary general wrote on his Twitter profile.
In Lebanon, the investigation entrusted to judge Tareq Bitar has so far been hindered by the entire political class in power. The judge failed to question any of the senior political, institutional and security figures listed as suspects. (ANSAMed).
