(ANSA) – ATHENS, DEC 26 – “With sadness, we give our last farewell to President Karolos Papoulias, thanking him for his vigorous defense of social cohesion and national unity”. Thus the Greek president Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in a communiqué of condolence, announces the death of the former head of state, who was 92 years old. Elected in 2005, he led the country in the midst of the economic crisis that started in 2008 and obtained a second five-year term in 2010.
Founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok), from 1974 onwards Papoulias was elected member of the Central Committee in all Pasok congresses. Papoulias, in addition to being a great collaborator of the late socialist premier Andreas Papandreou, was also a great friend, close collaborator and confidant. (HANDLE).
