(ANSA) – BEIJING, DECEMBER 30 – Two people linked to the Hong Kong pro-democracy online newspaper Stand News were accused today of “conspiracy to publish seditious publications”, police said after yesterday’s raid against the publication. “The National Security Department of the police has officially charged two men, 34 and 52, respectively, and an online media company,” police said in a statement. Local media reports that the two are an editor and a former editor of Stand News.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government has called “irresponsible” criticism from around the world yesterday for the arrests of seven Stand News journalists, which led to its immediate closure. “Some outside forces, under the pretext of media freedom, have made irresponsible comments on law enforcement in Hong Kong,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said today in a briefing, adding that this “completely confuses what it is right and what is wrong and it misleads public opinion. ” (HANDLE).
